“You can’t fool culture. You can’t fool people. They can sense when it’s not authentic.” – Moe Shalizi, Sun in Aries
Moe Shalizi (b. 1990) lost his father at 17. After he became the notorious manager to global EDM phenomenon DJ Marshmello, the Afghan-American Aries recalls in an interview how his immigrant father would treat his family to meals with nothing in front of him on the table. Later, Shalizi learnt that his father couldn’t afford to feed all of them so he decided to forego his share.
Shalizi studied finance at university as a parting promise to his late father, but spent most of his time organising EDM parties for his peers. This led to low-paid work as an artist manager while his finance classmates rose through the ranks at prominent corporations.
Extreme Aries energy is a good way to describe the stunt that catapulted Shalizi and Marshmello onto Internet celebrityhood and ongoing success in the competitive and fickle music industry. In 2016, Shalizi rejected a PR company’s $10,000 USD marketing pitch, and instead put his hard-won $5,000 USD into a single billboard. The billboard was placed en route to Coachella, the party destination de rigeur for celebrity-chasing Instagrammers. The billboard had Marshmello’s masked head next to these words: “I’m working hard now so my future daughter doesn’t have to sell detox tea on her social media.”

Shalizi ensured that Marshmello’s Instagram handle was printed directly beneath the copy, in a way that would make it impossible to crop out. It’s the kind of photo festival-going teenagers could make viral, in a world where organic reach on social media was still possible. The masked man not many people had heard of yet became the doting fantasy father to aspiring influencers with daddy issues. The dinner table sacrifices of the late Shalizi became word incarnate on a billboard that enabled people to feel what it was like to have a father you could actually miss – and granted his son the financial security he had always dreamt of.
This is how Aries energy works. A cardinal fire sign, Aries is the ultimate enabler. Aries gets shit done. Aries dares you to survive what can feel unsurvivable. Aries keeps you honest, focussed, tethered to a sense of purpose.
We find ourselves amidst an Aries stellium, with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Chiron in Aries. This kind of fire energy can propel you to ambitious heights, as Aries, ruled by Mars, is about passion, courage, and spiritual fierceness. The shadow side of Aries and Mars is worth noting as well: ambition without follow-through is just hot air, empty bluster that might get a lot of likes but will fail to change the world. Mars is currently in Gemini, which means that a lot of this Aries energy is about storytelling, finding your voice, and getting yourself heard. It’s a good time to ask yourself: what stories are worth telling? Whose voices are worth supporting?
If you know your natal planetary placements, explore where Aries is in your chart. The house where you find Aries, the house where you find Mars, and the relationships between planetary energies, will guide you as you discern how to work with fire energy at this time.
NOTE FOR ALL THE SIGNS
What vices would you give up for the life that’s worth living? It’s easy to think of vices as alcohol and drugs. But unsubstantiated limiting and self-defeating beliefs also count as vices, things we do to ourselves to achieve temporary comfort at the cost of deep love, deep friendships, deep work and deep purpose. The Jesuit priest Pedro Arrupe writes, “fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.” What are you in love with now – or what would someone who knows you say you’re in love with, looking at the way you’re living at the moment? Is it aligned with things you want people to say at your funeral?
NOTE FOR FIRE SIGNS (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
What’s worth fighting for? How does that rate vs whatever you’re throwing your energy at these days?
NOTE FOR AIR SIGNS (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
What’s keeping you up at night? Is it worth all that restlessness?
NOTE FOR EARTH SIGNS (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
What practices keep you grounded? How are you managing your energy so that you have enough reserves for the rest of the year?
NOTE FOR WATER SIGNS (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
What are the themes you keep returning to in your dreams? At what point does that story change, and why?
